As the name implies, pressure side pool cleaners use the pressure or return side of the swimming pool filtration system to operate. Many of these devices have hydraulically driven motors to power them around the swimming pool.In this design water jets are directed upward inside the throat of the cleaner, the force of the moving water creates a vacuum on the bottom of the unit allowing it to pick up debris and capture it in a bag located on top of the unit. the more water that can flow through the venturi the greater the suction on the bottom. Therefore the bag that catches debris must be designed to allow water to flow freely through it, meaning that it is not able to capture smaller debris such as sand and silt effectively. On the plus side, these cleaners stir up a considerable amount of water as they travel around the pool allowing more of the smaller debris to make it's way to the skimmers for removal by the pool filter.

Pressure side cleaners rely on a certain amount of water flow and pressure to operate effeciently. While some models may be connected to an already existing pool return, a dedicated cleaner line is always the best choice for operating a pressure side cleaner. Models that utilize a booster pump must have a dedicated line to operate. Booster pump models have more suction and cleaning power than non booster pump designs and are typically better at climbing vertical walls. Some pressure side cleaners utilize a sweeper on the back end of the unit. The sweeper is simply a section of small tubing with an orfice placed in the end, as water pressure is forced through the tube, it whips around like an out of control garden hose. The sweeper helps loosen debris and into suspension so it can be removed by the pool filtering system.

Most pressure side cleaners have some sort of reversing mechanism to aid them in navigating the pool and to assist in getting out of places they may get stuck in. Some have valves inside the unit to change direction others use an external type valve that uses water propultion to pull the unit to a different area of the pool. A thruster port is incorperated on some models to steer it around the pool. Properly adjusting the thruster jet will help the unit to track in different patters to more effectively cover all the pools surface.
